Crowshensa (Cross Roads)



BACKGROUND INFORMATION

This dance was composed by Mary Scarrott and was entered for, and won, the New Dance section of the Cornish Dance Competitions in 1996. Original composed as a solo dance for formal display it is now used at ceilis and troils as the "first Cornish line dance". DANCE NOTATIONS Formation

Individual dancer. The dance moves in a diagonal cross shape and then in a regular cross. The dancer always returns to the central position. Step

Steps used are:

• 'One, two, three hop' furry dance step

• Mr Martin's Reel Step

• Heel and Toe

• Cross or weaving step from the broom dance Bar 1 - 8

Dancer begins with hands behind back and dances a diagonal cross as follows:

Forward to right hand corner (1 2 3 hop) and back to place (1 2 3 hop)

Forward to left hand corner (1 2 3 hop) and return to place

Backwards to right hand corner (1 2 3 hop) and return to place

Backwards to left hand corner (1 2 3 hop) and return to place 9 - 16

With hands on hips, 3 Mr Martin's steps to the right and 2 stamps

Repeat to left

Heel and toe right foot, 1 side step to the right, stamp left foot then right foot

Heel and toe left foot, 1 side step to the left, stamp right foot then left foot. 17 - 24

With hands behind back, dance straight forward for 4 'weaving' or hornpipe steps

Dance backwards for 4 'step and swing' or kick steps

Dance 4 hornpipe steps backwards

Dance forwards for 4 'step and swing' steps (to return to place), turning to the right on the 4th step t dace a new direction to begin the dance again. The dance is performed 4 times, facing 4 different directions and turning clockwise each time. TUNE/SONG The suggested tune for this dance is Pledhen a Beswar (Four Hand Reel).
