BACKGROUND INFORMATION

David Rye, Mabe, 1972 In fact this dance originated in Bude as a dance composed for a local pantomime in 1945. Quite where and how it travelled in order to reach David Rye in Mabe by 1972 is a mystery. It is not a dance that we have taken very seriously and is not linked to a particular ritual or tradition. It is, however, very popular at social occasions! The dance was originally done to the Keel row, a very ubiquitous British tune. DANCE NOTATIONS Formation

Two circles, gentlemen forming the inner circle facing the ladies who form the outer circle. Step

'Step hop' or 'One, two three' hop furry dance step. Bars

Turn partners once with the right arm (elbow hold) 3 - 4

Turn partners once with the left arm (elbow hold) 5

Clap once and touch left elbow, Clap once and touch right elbow. 6

Clap once and put hands on the head followed by the shoulders and hips. 7

'Wiggle' Bow or curtsey to partner. 8

Turn on the spot and turn to the right, giving right hands to the lady or gentlemen towards the right.
