Tom Bawcock’s Eve is celebrated on 23rd December – the midwinter solstice. The name Tom Bawcock may have earlier Pagan connotations such as Beau – Cock but in Mousehole today it is the celebration of Tom Bawcock the legendary fisherman who braved gigantic seas in order to catch fish to alleviate famine in the village. Tom Bawcocks eve is celebrated by the preparation of Stargazy pie – a fish pie where the heads protrude through the pastry.
