‘Curl’ is a tradition that remains strong in Cornwall and has its roots in pre-reformation times. The distinctive culture and personality of Cornish people resulted in preserving many carols of Medieval European origin that have been lost elsewhere. For example, Hutchin’s Carol ‘When Adam First’ has a melody close to that of a 13th century salterello from Italy. The carol tradition evolved through the Methodist era with prolific composers such as Thomas Meritt with the result that Cornwall has inherited a deep tradition of carol singing over the Christmas period. Many towns have their own distinctive styles. Of particular note are the Padstow carols sung in the run up to Christmas day. It is a matter of particular Cornish pride that the service of nine lessons and carols was instigated and promoted by the Reverend Robert Steven Hawker of Morwenstowe. Look out for Carol singing and Carol Services in the Annual Events (December).
