The section of An Daras is dedicated to Cornish identity through the form of dress.
During the 18th and 19th Centuries a distinctive form a dress evolved in Cornwall defined by industry, geography and the Cornish community’s sense of individuality. Each 'gook' (or bonnet) worn by, for example, Bal Maidens (women who worked a the mine) would be unique depending on which mine a woman worked at. The 20th century saw a further development in the expression of Cornish identity in the form of tartans and kilts through to Cornish rugby shirts.
As this section of the site develops we will add more photographs of Cornish costume, and continue to add to the literature regarding costume. In the mean time, here are a few examples:
